Shingle

Asphalt shingles are the most common roof covering in Florida mainly because of the cost. Asphalt shingles usually come in a three-tab option which is guaranteed for 15 or 20 years, and a premium option know as an architectural or dimensional shingle which is warrantied for 30 years. There are also luxury shingles that give more dimension and shape options and can be warrantied longer.

Most manufactures of architectural shingles have a dozen colors or so most based in brown or gray with a white, black, red, and green options. Also, modern asphalt shingles are architected to reflect light (reduce heat) and resist mold and algae.

Asphalt shingles actually last 20% less than the warranty in Florida. The warranties are built around average weather and some areas in the U.S. get less rainfall in a year than a single thunderstorm in Florida. Florida roofs deal with extreme heat, extreme rain, and extreme wind and that in a normal summer afternoon with a thunderstorm. Insurance companies typically want an architectural roof replaced after 25 years, less if you are selling or refinancing the house.

Roof underlayment is a water-resistant or water-proof barrier installed on the plywood below your shingles. In Florida, a 30 pound or synthetic underlayment is required. A Peel and Stick underlayment is required in valleys (a roof valley is formed where two roof slopes meet. Water collects in a valley to flow off the roof). CenterPoint exceeds the valley requirements and adds a layer of metal since valleys have the highest flow of water off the roof. For water to leak in a CenterPoint roof valley, the water has to penetrate the shingle, the Peel and Stick, the metal and the plywood.

In addition, CenterPoint Roofing installs peel and stick underlayment on the whole roof:

  • Peel and Stick is self-adhesive. Less nails to damage the plywood. Less holes in the roof for water to seep in.

  • Peel and Stick won't tear easily. This provides better protection during the roofing process and better protection during severe weather.

  • Peel and stick seals to the nails from the shingles above reducing the chance of leaks.

  • The main reason? CenterPoint roofing offers a labor warranty, but we know that if we build a high-quality roof, we will rarely have to visit a roof until the next time it needs a replacement.
